Free 16x16 RPG tiles and sprites

Downloaderate here!

These are some old 16x16 tiles and sprites I did a while back for an RPG I was planning. The RPG was never finished (not even close really, but nevermind ;) ), so I've decided to dig them up and give them as a gift to the community. Use them for whatever you want to, basically. Although I'd appreciate it if you credited me for them. If you do use them, please let me know, i'd be interested to see what for. :).

There's ~50 or so of them, in various different formats (mostly pcx, some tga and one or two bmps). Most of the backdrop tiles are similar with different colours or features. There's a girl with walking animations and some static characters as well. The shots below have a lot of the tiles in them :)

Some mockups using them:

{"name":"mockup.png","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/2\/a\/2a5d28a70d14713a8cf0b00b28b877f5.png","w":320,"h":200,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/2\/a\/2a5d28a70d14713a8cf0b00b28b877f5"}mockup.png

These are the snow ones (just blown up a bit, they're still 16x16):

{"name":"snow_mockup.png","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/1\/d\/1d11a46a0d29da46a345ce64c6d37c14.png","w":643,"h":482,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/1\/d\/1d11a46a0d29da46a345ce64c6d37c14"}snow_mockup.png

Feel free to use them. I might even be persuaded to do some more or alter them a bit if you ask me nicely 8-).

Have a nice day now ^.^

Richard Phipps

A generous gift. Thank you!

i dont really like:-/

Well dont use them then :-X

the_y_man

if i dont like, why would i use them?...

Reno Midgar

If you dont like you wouldnt use them, but at the same time if you dont like why bother dampening someones spirits by stating that the fact that you dont like, which in turn prompted me to post if you dont like dont use them, which prompted you to post if I dont like why would I use them, which prompted me to post that if you dont like you wont use? ::)

Richard Phipps

Yves is just spamming. He can't even program anyway. :)

As an musician (which is a form of art), I always appreciate it when people say they dont like my work.

...right....that wasnt even spam, I was merely stating my point of view. Yeah, I can't program....guess what I'm majoring in at university.....Comp Sci.:o

Constructive critism and saying "I dont like that" is the same as saying to your girlfriend "I'm not sure the colour suits you" or "You look pig rough in that you fat bitch, go and change for f*cks sake" ;)

Richard Phipps

Yeah, I can't program....guess what I'm majoring in at university.....Comp Sci.:o

Really?? :o But you never talk about programming..

Can we please ban Yves again?

Saying "I dont like" is not all that bad, it's an honest opinion. Sometimes, I, just, dont, like. No need to butter things up, especially when it comes to art.
If you cant take something as small as "I dont like", I recommend you go hide yourself in a cave, where you will be safe from all forms of criticism (that was not even directed at you in the first place), so yeah, grow some tough skin.:-*

Exactly what did i do that was so bad in this thread? people are just uselessly diverting their attention towards my opinion, and since they dont like it, labeling it as "spam"::)

Reno Midgar

Yves, I dont like you...at all. :-*

the_y_man

Yves, I dont like you...at all.

Thomas Fjellstrom

Its not this thread. its all the spamming you were doing.

Oh I dont know, I'd do pretty much anything for £479,000,000,000 sterling

the_y_man

TF, but right now, it's about THIS thread.

Reno Midgar, i have 25 cents on me.

Reno Midgar

25 cents but no sense

spellcaster

nope. banning you is about you, not this thread.

the_y_man

If you didnt notice, i have actually started behaving myself a bit more (since day before yesterday).
:ox1000

But then again spell-boy, you've always been an arse to me, so YOU get a BIG WET KISSY:-*

Reno Midgar

I think your quote of Thomas Fjellstrom in your sig just about says it all ;)

AFAIK this is the first time I commented on your great posting style.
But if you feel better by believing that I had always bad feeling towards you, well, go on.

AngelChild

You! Out of my thread! (I appreciate that you don't like them, but i'd rather you didn't have an argument here, please :) ).

I dont take the internet seriously. I cannot understand how people can actually hate one another over the net. So, no.

[EDIT]Angelchild, i will respect your request and leave this thread, people, if you wish to do more bashin (which i really enjoy) you can always bug me over msn at the_y_man84 (at) hotmail .com[/EDIT]

Richard Phipps

Well other people do. But it seems you don't respect their opinions. Hence they will not be happy with you. Then you will be banned. It that what you want? Why don't you try to make friends?

spellcaster

Back on topic:
I like the tiles, they have a nice 8bit feel.
I think the grass in the 2nd image is a bit to noisy. It's hard to concentrate on anything because my eye doesn't find a focus.

the_y_man

Richie Rich, read the edit

Richard Phipps

Fair enough.

Ontopic: I like the first mockup, but maybe the trees are a little too red.
However people can always change them to suit.

james_lohr

Yeah, I don't like the snow one much. The water in the first looks quite cool though :).

Quote:

I second the notion.

Yves, it's all very well expressing your opinions, but it's the pointless posts that are annoying. Like:

Quote:

23yrold3yrold

Maybe we could use a few of these tiles in KQ. :)

EDIT: Sonuva b*tch, people.

Reno Midgar

I always read of people wanting free tiles (on this and other forums) so I'm sure they'll come in handy for someone...my RPG uses pre-rendered 3D backdrops so I wont be wanting them.

AngelChild

Feel free to spread them around or whatever :)

DanTheKat

The tiles remind me of older QBasic games.

Carrus85

I like the tiles, anyway... they have a nice console-ish feel. Kinda like the original final fantasy...

23yrold3yrold

I'd prefer if they were all on one sheet though. :( The tiles, anyway ...

phate

Not bad for programmer art. Thats what they are right...

Thomas Fjellstrom

You call that programers art? No. Programers art is stickmen drawn in Paint, or using allegro's primitive drawing functions (ala: hline, rect) to do graphics :P

Reno Midgar

I resent that statement! Here, I made this to prove u wrong (only took 20 minutes, and I'm a programmer)

Surt

Pah. You call that programmer art. This is real programmer art.

Angel Child: I second 23rg's suggestion for sheets.

Nice old school style, but what's with the green skin?

Reno Midgar

Haha! No mate, thats s*it art! You cant judge a programmers skill by how crap his/her art is, but you can call me the man because not only am I a coder but also a damn fine artist! :P

Torbjörn Josefsson

Isn't "programmer art" an oxymoron? ;)

(just bragging with my knowledge of pointless words)

AngelChild

I'm colourblind (seriously) :)

Uh.. Way to use povray ::)

Quote:

You can judge thier ART skills though.. yeesh. But that screen that guy showed with boxes and what not, that is the deffinition of programmers art. Even the big name game makers start off with such art.

Derezo

colour blind artist.. wow, that's like a deaf pianist ;D

I use carl's type of art for the module creation. Then replace them with programmers art or placeholders when the module is integrated into the rest of the system.

james_lohr
Quote:

I'm colourblind (seriously)

Heh, so am I. I used to have green skin in my old games ;D. I was fine as soon as I started setting my own RPG values though. I also used to have pink water and sky. - Magic pink (255,0,255) looks almost the same colour as sky blue to me.

Reno Midgar

Fjellstrom: I have never used Povray in my life, and no that isn't a good defintion of programmers art, its a definition of a programmer who cant draw for s*it.

Thomas Fjellstrom

I didn't say it was good. I said it is THE deffinition of "Programmers Art" Now, you seem to be an artist as well. Most of us arn't. Hence the reason for "Programmers Art".

You sure that wasn't povray? well it was some raycaster or 3d modeler. nothin to really write home about.

Reno Midgar

Nevertheless it was art, and I'm a programmer, so it was programmers art.

Thomas Fjellstrom

No.

you said:

but you can call me the man because not only am I a coder but also a damn fine artist!

Its just plain Art. As you are an aritist... or so you claim.

Reno Midgar

I'm a programmer and an artist, so when I do art it is, in theory, programmers art. When I write code, it is, in theory, artists code.

Synapse Jumps

You guys argue about the stupidest things. Who cares if it's programmer's art? Who cares what Yves says? Honestly.

On-topic: Those are nice, but I do second the requests for them all on one sheet, and maybe in .bmp format.

Marcello

Programmer's art refers to temporary, generally awful, graphics intended as placeholders to work with while coding until decent/final artwork can be swapped in...

Marcello

p.s. that 3d render sucks

Reno Midgar

Well lets see you do something better in under 25 minutes d*ckhead

AngelChild

Stop fighting :'(

Marcello

22 minutes I usually spend more than 25 minutes unless I'm sketching.

Yurgh :)
But seriously, how do you colorblind people manage in games? Seems to me that not seeing colors would be a serious disadvantage, especially in online vision-heavy games like FPSs :)

Marcello

Well most colorblind people aren't completely colorblind, they just have trouble distinguishing red/green/whatever.

But yea, it's a disability. I mean, how do people with only one hand manage in games? I'm sure there are problems that apply there as well.

Marcello

AngelChild

Yeah, it's not necessarily that we don't see colour, just that it's difficult to tell red/green or blue/yellow or whichever combination apart. I'm not that bad really, but i do silly things like green skin a lot of the time. I do have a friend who can't see colour at all though :o

Yeah, I have a friend who'se like that too.

I can't really imagine what that looks like... my own colour vision is excellent (even more so considering I'm a guy - men typically have poorer colour vision than women), of which I'm rather glad.

I do like the tiles and sprites, although I don't think I'll be using them.

AngelChild

Well, from what he says I gather he can only see things in shades of black and white. So I'd imagine it's a bit like seeing the world through a black and white TV set, although I don't know if that's anything like how he perceives it. I know that he can't watch television without special glasses though (i don't know how they work either, but they do, allegedly).

james_lohr
Quote:

That's why I don't play them. Having said that, I'm good at judging tones and light intensity (perhaps better than the average non-colourblind person). For this reason I find red and yellow very easy is distinguish between, but red/green impossible.

Having played around with RGB values in PSP, I've come to realise something quite interesting: Any two colours that have a similar total R+G value (in fact it's a bit more like R+1.3*G) I have trouble telling the difference between. e.g. (220,0,0) and (0,180,0) or (255,0,255) and (0,200,255).

Rampage
Quote:

but red/green impossible.

This has always fascinated me. You see them as the same color? Is it a shade of gray?

james_lohr

Yes, I see them as almost the same colour (a reddish greeny brown colour). So if you show me a dark green colour, I'll struggle to tell if it is red green or brown, but if you were to give me two pencils, one dark green and one red, although I would struggle, I would probably eventually be able to tell which is which (mainly from a lifetime of practice).

I certainly don't see in greyscale ;D. Still, it can be a real pain in the *rse at times >:(.

AngelChild

I once got told off for colouring in a map of britain red instead of green :o. I've also been known to colour my mum's hair green in pictures :). I have to concentrate greatly on something that's dark red/green to figure out what colour it is though :-/

Mars

Wow, colour blind women are very rare. And you program too? That's like a chance of ... one in a million!

BAF

plus she is a good artist that programs, that lowers it to 1 in a billion ;)

AngelChild

You accusing me of being good? :)

Richard Phipps

Somehow I now expect to see a picture of you with red or green hair! ;D

AngelChild

Have considered dying it blue :)

(made and posted that image in 3 minutes; it's a record ...)

My friend dyed his blue, you see, so i'll just nick some stuff off of him when I go down to southampton next month ;D
